A pool is a hole with a liner in it until the ground around it is resolved. The surround decides whether the space works: how the deck drains, whether the coping is comfortable underfoot in August, where the equipment sits, how the spa relates to the pool, and what you look at from the water.
Drainage is the part that gets underestimated. A pool deck sheds a lot of water and it has to go somewhere that is not the pool and not the foundation. That is a grading and piping question, and it is one we self-perform.
We also work alongside pool builders. If the shell is someone else’s scope, the terrace, walls, drainage, planting and screening can still be designed and built as one piece rather than assembled by whoever shows up next.

What it typically costs
What drives the number.
Square footage of deck, how much grade has to move, and whether retaining is needed to make a level pad account for most of the cost. Sloped lots cost more than flat ones, sometimes considerably.
We would rather give you a real figure for your property than a range wide enough to be meaningless. That is what the consultation is for — an hour on the ground gets you a number you can actually plan against.

- Do you build the pool itself?
- No. We design and build everything around it, and we regularly coordinate with the pool builder so the excavation, decking and drainage happen in the right order.
- When should the landscape be designed — before or after the pool?
- Before. The pool location, deck elevation and equipment placement are much cheaper to get right on paper than to work around later.
- What about drainage off the deck?
- It gets designed. A pool deck is a large impervious surface and the water has to be routed deliberately, away from both the pool and the house.
