Easton is fifteen minutes east of the shop, and it is the town in our area with the strongest inherited landscape tradition — which raises the bar on what new work has to look like next to it.
You are working in Olmsted’s neighbourhood
North Easton holds one of the most significant concentrations of nineteenth-century landscape and architecture in the state — H. H. Richardson buildings set in grounds laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, including the Rockery. That matters practically, not just historically: the local vocabulary is native stone, generous massing and restraint. Fussy, over-detailed hardscape looks wrong here in a way it does not everywhere. We design accordingly, and in the historic district we design knowing there is review.
Stone is the material the town already speaks
Easton is full of built fieldstone and rough granite, a lot of it a century and a half old. New walls that use the same stone at the same scale disappear into the property in the right way. New walls in a manufactured face next to that inheritance never quite settle in. Where the budget allows, this is a town to spend it on the stone.
Aquifer ground, and low ground near the Canoe
Easton shares the Canoe River Aquifer ACEC with Norton and Mansfield, and the southern end of town runs low and wet toward the river. Stormwater gets infiltrated on site. On the lower lots, drainage design comes before terrace design, not after.

Easton is about 15 minutes from our Norton shop. That is close enough to commit to a schedule and hold it, and close enough that if something needs looking at we can be there the same day rather than the same week.
We keep the service area to six towns on purpose. A short list is the only honest way to promise a start date.
